Herve Leger, Buy Cheap Herve Leger Bandage Dress » A Call for ...

Pope Benedict XVI

Reading Diarmaid MacCulloch’s extraordinary and limpid new work Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years (a history informed by a general, if Anglican, sympathy for its subject), I came across the following passage from Cardinal John Henry Newman’s classic statement of belief, his Apologia Pro Vita Sua:

The Catholic Church holds it better for the Sun and Moon to drop from Heaven, for the earth to fail, and for all the many millions on it to die from starvation in extremest agony … than that one soul, I will not say, should be lost, but should commit one single venial sin, should        tell one wilful untruth, or should steal one poor farthing without excuse.

In a few days, Joseph Ratzinger will make one of the most portentous voyages of his papacy, landing in Britain to announce the beatification of the author of those remarkable words. I am not writing about Catholic dogma today, and in any case do not have the space to discuss the hysterical, totalitarian fanaticism of Newman’s statement, coming as it does from a learned man celebrated for his relative “moderation.” I thought I would simply ask how the church would emerge if anything remotely like Newman’s criterion were to be applied to it.

As we have recently been forcibly reminded, the Roman Catholic Church holds it better for the cries of raped and violated children to be ignored, and for the excuses and alibis of their rapists and torturers indulged, and for a host of dirty and wilful untruths to be manufactured wholesale, and for the funds raised ostensibly for the poor to be paid out in hush money and shameful bribery, rather than that one tiny indignity or inconvenience be visited on the robed majesty of a man-made church or any limit set to its self-proclaimed right to be judge in its own cause.

Earlier this year, as Roman Catholic authorities from Ireland to Germany to Australia to Belgium to the United States were being confronted with the fallout of decades of sexual assault and subsequent denial, I asked a simple question in print. Why was this not considered a matter for the police and the courts? Why were we asking the church to “put its own house in order,” an expression that was the exact definition of the problem to begin with? Why had almost no offending priest or bishop faced justice, and even then usually after a long period of protection from the church’s own “courts”? I followed this up with a telephone call to Geoffrey Robertson, a British barrister with a second-to-none record in international human rights cases. (If it matters, the last time we had both cooperated was in a campaign against the British Act of Succession, an archaic piece of legislation that explicitly discriminates against Catholics.) This was one of the best dimes I have ever dropped. After a group of generous humanists and atheists agreed to pay his extremely modest fee, Robertson produced a detailed legal brief against the papacy and has made it widely available for the use of all interested or aggrieved parties. Titled The Case of the Pope: Vatican Accountability for Human Rights Abuse, it has just been published in the United Kingdom by Penguin Books. (It will be available in the United States in October.)

As if almost timed to coincide with its publication, and with the impending arrival of Ratzinger on British soil, the recent disclosures of the putrid state of the church in Belgium have thrown the whole scandal into an even sharper relief. Consider: The now-resigned bishop of Bruges, Roger Vangheluwe, stands revealed by his own eventual confession as being guilty of incest as well as rape, having regularly “abused” his male nephew between the ages of 5 and 18. The man’s superior as head of the Belgian church, Cardinal Godfried Danneels, has been caught on tape urging the victim to keep quiet. A subsequent official report, commissioned by the country’s secular authorities, has established that this level of morality was the rule throughout the hierarchy, with the church taking it upon itself to “forgive” the rapists and to lean upon their victims. Very belatedly, a few months ago, the Belgian police finally rose from their notorious torpor and raided some ecclesiastical offices in search of evidence that was being concealed. Joseph Ratzinger, who had not thus far found a voice in which to mention the doings of his Belgian underlings beats by dre, promptly emitted a squeal of protest—at the intervention of the law.

Robertson’s brief begins with a meticulous summary of the systematic fashion in which child-rape was covered up by collusion between local Catholic authorities and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome, an office that under the last pope was run by Ratzinger himself. (So flagrant was this obstruction of justice that many senior Catholic apologists have now started to blame the deceased pontiff in an effort to excuse his deputy and successor, all the while continuing to put forward Pope John Paul II as a candidate for sainthood!) The brief continues with a close examination of the Vatican’s claim to be a state, and its related claim that statehood confers legal immunity on the pope, even in gross cases of abuse of human rights. Without undue difficulty, Robertson shows both claims to be laughably void and based, furthermore, on a history of disgraceful collaboration with dictatorship and sheltering of wanted criminals.

Cardinal Newman himself was rather dubious about the late-19th-century proclamation of papal infallibility. He also asked to be buried in the same grave as his lifelong companion, Ambrose St. John. The Catholic authorities have now rudely disinterred the bodies, finding nothing that had survived decay or could serve as a relic. This is grotesque enough, but not as grotesque as the air of persecuted innocence that they wear when confronted with their obscene offenses. Now at last there is a careful guide to legal redress, which can be taken up either by a victim or by a prosecutor and used to bring a man-made outfit, and its chief executive, within the rule of law. The sun and moon don’t need to fall and the species doesn’t have to die in agony in order to expiate this sin—a little application of simple earthly justice is all that is required. Will it really continue to be withheld?

Moroccan Muslim Brotherhood PM refuses to talk with female Belgian

Here is an example of what is wrong with the Western response to Islamic arrogance and intolerance.   When the Moroccan Muslim Brotherhood PM refused to acknoledge the presence of the female representative of  Belgium the entire Belgium delegation should have told the Moroccan to go F himself and walked away from the meeting.  Instead, the Belgains allowsd the insult ot go unanswered in a cowerdly display of dhimmitde.

every time the West allows it's way of life to be denegrated, the Islamists win another small battle in their Grand Jihad to dominate the West.

Islam can never be allowed to get away with this sort of behaviour.

FROM POINTDEBASCULECANADA.CA:

Moroccan Muslim Brotherhood PM refuses to talk with female Belgian minister

Écrit par Point de Bascule on 25 Avril 2012. Posted in Actualités d'ici et d'ailleurs Abdelilah Benkiran does not seem to conceive that a foreign government could send a female representative to talk with him. During the whole meeting he talked strictly with Belgian minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders and refused to speak with the Belgian minister of Justice.

Fabrice Grofilley (RTLinfo.be – April 25, 2012): Moroccan PM snubs Annemie Turtelboom and almost provokes a diplomatic incident (Quand le premier ministre marocain snobe Annemie Turtelboom, à la limite de l’incident diplomatique)
Rabat (Morocco) – April 11, 2012
On that day the Moroccan Prime minister, Abdelilah Benkiran, received in audience Didier Reynders, Belgian minister of Foreign Affairs and Annemie Turtelboom, minister of Justice. Both Belgians got a cold reception.

Abdelilah Benkiran does not seem to conceive that a foreign government could send a female representative to talk with him. During the whole meeting, he talked strictly with Didier Reynders. Worse, the Moroccan PM explained to his visitor that he speaks French very well and that it was “useless to bring an interpreter with him”. The message is clear: I do not speak with a woman. Annemie Turtelboom could not believe it. All the dossiers she is responsible of (and they are not light ones: equality between men and women, forced marriages, return of convicted prisoners in their home country) were eventually tackled by Didier Reynders. Facing them, the Moroccan held to his prayer beads during the whole meeting.
After the meeting, Annemie Turtelboom was furious. If Didier Reynders had not been there and if she had not feared to provoke a major diplomatic incident, she would have left and slammed the door, she said.

The anecdote is significant. Abdelilah Benkiran is a member of the Justice and Development Party, the Islamist party that won the last elections. In the last few days, he even criticized the Moroccan king, Mohammed VI, something never seen before. “The Arab Spring is not over yet. It is still here and could well come back”, he said according to Reuters.

Two weeks after the incident, the Belgian side has not done anything yet. Annemie Turtelboom’s spokesperson now claims that the Moroccan PM was joking around and that he ended up apologizing. Unofficially though, those who told me the anecdote are not sure that these apologies were expressed.

Four face jail for Belgian £1m gold bullion plot News Leak UK Edition

A driver and 3 other males are facing prison sentences following
admitting becoming involved in a plot to steal £1 million worth of gold and
silver bullion.

They pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey right now to conspiracy to steal the bullion in Antwerp, Belgium, final October.

Bullion lorry driver Brian Mulcahay, 44, of Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, David Chatwood, 53, and Stanley Rose, 74, both of Brentwood, Essex, and David Gale, 55, also of Essex, had been remanded in custody.

The valuable metal was said to be the property of Swiss business Metalor.

Mulcahay was found by police locked in his car in Belgium on October 4 right after ringing his employers to say he had been robbed.

Chatwood was observed to speak to some of the other accused conspirators 4 days later at a Harvester restaurant in Dartford, Kent.

Nine days immediately after the robbery, most of the bullion was found in an apartment and a hotel space in Antwerp which had been rented by Rose, the court heard.

Judge Peter Rook told the males: “This is a really serious matter and a custodial sentence is inevitable.”

They will be sentenced later this year following the trial of five men and one particular woman accused of the very same offence and of conspiracy to launder the proceeds of the crime.

This is Belgium: Mark Eyskens

Remember, a few weeks ago I wrote about chatting with the street cleaners and the girls preparing their bachelors party?  I continued my promenade through Leuven and realized, just a bit too late for my camera to be ready, that Mark Eyskens, the former Belgian Prime Minister, Minister of Economics and Minister of Foreign Affairs, was walking right beside me.

I am sure that Mr Eyskens would have agreed on posing for This is Belgium but I decided against disturbing  him and left with these two shots of him walking swiftly through the Munstraat in Leuven, where he resides.

Shine Brighter Than the Star with Guerlain Shine Automatique! Sous ...

Ever since I raved on and on about Guerlain Rouge Automatique, my obsession with Guerlain lipsticks has not been a secret. I’ve tried great lipsticks afterwards, but to me personally Guerlain remains THE brand that knows all the secrets about great lipsticks. Should we see if Shine Automatique, a new line of Guerlain lipsticks that was launched very recently, lives up to the same expectations?

I know nothing about the technology involved in making a lipstick formula, but Shine Automatique makes a lot or promises! In a nutshell, it is supposed to offer coverage without being thick or heavy, radiant color without being frosty, and shimmery pearly particles that give lips exceptional shine.

Sous Le Vent (200) is a nude-ish brownish shade. I suspected that like all nudes, it would wash me out. But lo and behold, it does NOT! I think it deserves a prize for that, because anything REMOTELY nude-ish usually washes me out beyond recognition. The shimmer in this one is slightly less apparent, but it’s definitely still there.

Extrait de Rose (262) is a beautiful fuschia. The shimmer in this one does shine like crazy, and to be honest it’s probably my favorite out of the bunch! It’s such a happy color!

A La Parisienne (263) is a very complex shade. It looks pretty red in the tube, but on me I see pink, red, and coral. It is very beautiful, and I don’t think I own anything comparable!

Rose Pompon (264) is a brownish raisin color. It’s another color that I suspected wouldn’t work for me. If this shade were opaque I would definitely not be able to make it work. However, this formula magically enables me to wear it!

Here is the arm swatch if you want to see it. I’m really sorry I made a mistake and swatched Rose Pompon (264) before A La Parisienne (263), but I did label the swatches so hopefully there will be no confusion!

I have reviewed the packaging and smell in details in my Rouge Automatique Coque d’Or post, and they stay the same. I am a fan of the mechanism, the precise tip, and the slight perfumery smell does not bother me.

Shine Automatique are a different type of lipsticks, and I think it will all come down to personal preferences between Shine Automatique and her big sister, Rouge Automatique. Despite the fact that the colors are not “opaque,” in a strange way these lipsticks do provide lips with just enough color and shine. The shimmer is very beautiful and fine. It is not the rough type of glitter that makes your lips feel like sandpaper. If you wear it the whole day, with all the talking, drinking, and eating, you will find some shimmer around your lips. However, it doesn’t travel far, and it is so fine that it doesn’t bother me (read: no risk of looking like a disco ball). The texture is spot-on. It’s creamy enough to glide on, but not slippery so it slips right off you. It won’t survive a meal, but it doesn’t entirely disappear after a drink. On me it wears around 2.5 hours. It’s as moisturizing as Rouge Automatique. I have woken up with slightly drier lips, but a while after applying it my lips became as smooth as they would be with a good lip balm! Also, it doesn’t cling onto the dry bits or imperfection. It’s very comfortable on the lips and not waxy at all!

Bottom line: What I love about this formula is I think it makes every shade wearable for everyone. If you have always wanted to wear a certain type of colors but can’t make it work for you, these are a good bet. It’s moisturizing, glossy, and it does shimmer in the best possible way. For everything this lipstick promises, it truly delivers. With that said, I remain a die-hard fan of Guerlain lipsticks! I want to check other shades out now!

What do you think? Is Shine Automatique something you might want to look into? How do you feel about the general lipstick/balm/gloss hybrid lip products that have been sprouting up on the market?

Sunny, your beauty culture translator xx

Individual's Tax Burdens Rose in 2011 in OECD

Personal Income Taxes are rising around the worldCumulative tax obligations for individuals are rising around the world, with most OECD countries increasing the overall tax burden on taxpayers throughout 2011 by reducing tax allowances and increasing personal income tax rates.

On April 25th the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development published the latest edition of its annual Taxing Wages Report, which showed that the average tax and social security burden on employees increased in 26 out of 34 OECD member countries during the course of 2011.

According to the report, in most cases the increased tax burden was due to a rise of effective rates of personal income taxes, and not due to hikes in social security contributions. However, out of the 24 countries which raised the cumulative tax obligations for taxpayers, only 5 countries increased tax rates on incomes, while the other countries resorted to reducing tax free allowances and removing available tax credits for individuals.

Some countries bucked the trend and decreased the overall tax liabilities for individuals, with the report noting that New Zealand and the USA both saw a drop in the overall tax obligations for individuals, with a 1.1 percent and 0.9 percent drop respectively.

The report indicated that the highest tax burden across all OECD countries is currently for taxpayers in Belgium, who will pay nearly 55.5 percent of their cumulative annual income in taxes. Taxpayers in Germany will face taxes of 49.8 percent, and individuals in Hungary and France will see a rate of 49.4 percent.

In all OECD countries, aside from Mexico and Chile, the proportionate tax liabilities faced by families with children was lower than the taxes for single individuals without children.

Taking into consideration all available tax breaks, allowances, and benefits, currently the lowest rates of personal taxes are faced by taxpayers Chile, Mexico and New Zealand, with effective overall rates of 7 percent, 12.3 percent, and 13.5 percent respectively.

Chocolate in Brugge - Brugge, Belgium Travel Blog

Flag of Belgium  , West Flanders,
Sunday, April 1, 2012

Sunday 1st April

Got up fairly early and had breaky and packed up and then left for the train station. The first tram I tried to get on however was pretty full and I was still on the steps of it when the doors attempted to shut on my bag so I decided maybe hop off and wait for the next one which the guys on the tram found funny as they laughed while it drove away.  Anyway I made my way to the station and onto the train to Brugge.  After about an hour I arrived and waited for the bus to take me to the other side of town to the hostel.  I got the bus no worries however as I watched the little blue dot drive closer to my hostel, it turned down the street just before it got there and then started driving further away and then outside the walls of Brugge and out into who knows where so at the next stop I jumped up and asked the driver who said my best bet was to get off and walk back abit.  I managed to also find my way to the hostel ok which was only really a ten min walk from where I got off the bus.  So I checked in and then went to walk into town to check it out.  The main centre is about a ten min walk from my hostel so it isn't far, and then the other side of town is only another 15mins after that.  I walked past and to many beautiful old buildings such as the Belfry tower (really tall slightly crooked tower in the main square), the parliament buildings, and the many churches (used to be over 80 churches within the 8km (circrumfrenced) town, now theres about 25 still) while strolling through the gorgeous old cobbled, canal lined streets.  I read somewhere that the locals sometimes feel like they live in Disneyland, and you can see why.

I then went to a chocolate museum which was really interesting and had everything from the history of the cocoa beans and the people that first discovered and used them, to the timeline from cocoa bean to chocolate drink to hard chocolate to where it is today, to the making of chocolate, different brands of chocolate, why Belgian chocolate is unique and much more.  The best part was at the end where there was a demonstration of making of praline chocolates where we got to try some yay!  There was even chocolate sculptures including a 520kg sculpture of barack obama… weird much?

By this time it was about 5pm but the sun was still high in the sky (so much has changed since middle of winter in Norway where the sun never rose!) so I decided to do one of the many boat tours through the little canals.  The first one was just shutting but he said the next one down would be open, so I went to it and asked if he was open and then there was some weird communication but then he said he was closed and one of the boat guys was laughing.  So anyway I just waited around for a while and then more people began to buy tickets and go on the boat so I went up and asked for a ticket and he reluctantly gave me one.  I honestly still don’t understand why he said he was closed, but apparently it was some sort of rude joke on my behalf.  Oh well.  I got to go on the boat tour which was quite nice and pretty interesting with lots of picturesque views from the canals.

After the boat tour I wandered back towards the hostel where I went to relax in the bar for a while.  Here I met two nice Canadian girls who I chatted with and then we went to get dinner from this shop that sells loads of vegetarian and vegan food (one was vege one was vegan!) where I got a big pork kebeb… so much for vego!  It was pretty good and we went back to the hostel where the girls decided to do the pub crawl and consequently convinced me to do it as well.  I knew from the start it was a bad idea… we waited in the pub before hand for a while so had afew Belgium beers before it even began, and then it started and we had more beer, and unfortunately free shots at each of the 5 bars.  I’ve decided lots of beer mixed with lots of shots after not much dinner and being slightly unwell is a very very bad combination which I will not do again.  It was fun and I met some lovely people however I didn’t feel all that well by the end of it so myself and one of the Canadians went back to the hostel and crawled into bed.

Monday 2nd April

Woke up with a pretty sore head today, but managed to get up in time for the breaky which was ok except for the whole no toaster thing.  After breaky I slowly got ready to head out to the free walking tour.  The walking tour went for two hours and was run by the same guy as the pub crawl.  It was pretty interesting and explained abit about the history and the many old buildings and churches etc.

After the walking tour I wandered around the town for a while just taking in the scenery before getting a Panini for  lunch along one of the main food streets.  I then headed back to the hostel with the intention of hiring a bike however once I got there I was told there were none left.  At this stage I couldn’t be bothered walking to the other bike hire which was on the other side of town so I just hung around the hostel for a while.  I went to the local supermarket up the road and decided to eat Belgia n chocolate how the locals do it – from the packets at the supermarket – apparently its a lot cheaper but tastes the same and lasts longer.  I got a big block of Cote d’Or praline filled milk chocolate and opened it straight away – it was delicious, like a block of guylian mmm… Since it was such a nice day I decided to go for a wander and went towards the outskirts of the town where there were some big Belgium windmills and nice green grassy areas.  I did what quite afew others were doing and lay down in the sun on the grass below the windmills.  It was so nice that I fell asleep here for about an hour or so.

However I was woken up by the cold when the shade of a tree crept up on me so I got up and continued my wander through some of the streets before arriving back at the hostel.   Here I stayed for a while doing blogging and such before I went to find some dinner in town.  Unfortunately I had left it a bit late as it was around 8pm at this stage and apparently people in Brugge eat early as the restaurants all shut at 8pm!  However there are still the many restaurants that cater for the many tourists that stay open, but this means higher prices and less tasty food – oh well, I had no choice so I went for lasagne, the cheapest option.  After dinner I walked around afew of the pretty areas all lit up at night and then went back to the hostel to bed.
